How Inland Hurricanes Are Redefining Risk Management

Mitigating the Persistent Threat of Hurricanes for High-Risk Industries

Many business leaders who have consulted with our firm have benefited from our advice and proactive planning, which has focused on raising awareness and implementing insurance policies that protect their businesses and assets in ways they had not previously considered. We have emphasized how hurricanes can wreak havoc far from coastal regions, causing significant flood and wind damage inland.

Mitigating Hurricane Threats:

Meteorologists and insurance professionals have long recognized that hurricanes are not limited to coastal areas. In fact, the insurance industry has increasingly acknowledged the risks associated with inland hurricanes, especially as claims for flood and wind damage have surged after such storms.

The Importance of Risk Management and Specialized Insurance

With hurricanes becoming more frequent and intense, it’s essential for businesses in affected regions to implement robust risk management strategies. A common misconception is that standard flood insurance covers all hurricane-related risks, including pollution. However, specialized pollution insurance is often needed, as traditional policies may not address the costs associated with environmental damage or long-term contamination.

Recent events with Hurricanes Helene and Milton underscore this reality. Hurricane Helene formed on September 23, 2024, rapidly intensifying into a Category 4 hurricane by September 27, making landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. While Helene weakened as it moved inland, it still brought significant rainfall, leading to flooding and wind damage across Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Shortly after Helene, Hurricane Milton developed and contributed to widespread flooding across multiple states, compounding the challenges for recovery efforts. The federal government has activated disaster assistance for states impacted by both hurricanes, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia

On a historical note, one of the most devastating inland hurricane events occurred on August 19, 1969, when the remnants of Hurricane Camille unleashed nearly two feet of rain in certain areas, resulting in catastrophic flooding and landslides that claimed over 150 lives, with many victims never recovered. The destruction primarily stemmed from debris flows—rapidly moving landslides that caused extensive property damage and loss of life. Even decades later, some landscapes remain stripped bare due to the lasting effects of that disaster.

These recent events highlight the ongoing risk of hurricanes causing severe damage far inland. As we continue to experience the impacts of climate change, the potential for inland flooding and other hazards will likely increase, making awareness and preparedness essential for safeguarding lives and property.

As we reflect on these events, it is crucial to understand the ongoing risks posed by hurricanes. While many regions are beautiful destinations for travel and recreation, it’s essential to acknowledge the potential for severe weather when planning your visit.
